Call to Action: January 14, 2019

NO TO TRUMP’S RACISM

NO WALL

Trump’s wall has always been a metaphor for his racism. His campaign advisors dreamed it up as a mnemonic device to incite his followers with lies about the so-called “threat” posed by the immigration of people of color. “Build the wall” became code words for his bigotry, which he has repeatedly expressed by:

  • Calling African countries “shitholes”
  • Calling for a complete ban on Muslims entering the US
  • Supporting white supremacists
  • Using ethnic slurs and demeaning, false language about racial and ethnic minorities

But all of these lies supporting the wall have finally been debunked.

Alice DiMicele

Trump caused the shutdown by demanding that America build a monument to his racism. Trump’s shutdown, the longest in history, has already:

  • Treated 800,000 federal employees, and even more contractors, as pawns, causing terrible financial hardship
  • Caused disruptions in air travel
  • Stopped FDA inspections of food with high contamination risk
  • Put vital services/payments at risk, including those by the IRS, FBI, HUD, SNAP Program and Indian Health Service
  • Damaged our economy

No compromise with Trump’s racism and inhumanity!

Reopen the Government!

No Wall!

**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR SENATORS**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS WYDEN AND MERKLEY:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I’m calling because I am adamantly opposed to Trump’s racist wall. I thank the Senator for co-sponsoring and voting for the passage of S. 24 (Government Employee Fair Treatment Act of 2019), ensuring that federal employees get back pay. I also ask the Senator to 1) convince more of his Republican colleagues, and Leader McConnell, to end the shutdown and pass the clean spending bills that they supported unanimously just a few weeks ago, and 2) introduce companion legislation to H.R. 339, to provide back pay to federal contractors who have been placed on unpaid leave. Thank you.”

**ACTION TWO: CALL COMPLICIT GREG WALDEN**

SAMPLE SCRIPT:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I’m calling because I am adamantly opposed to Trump’s border wall, which I understand Greg Walden still supports. I thank Mr. Walden for voting for the passage of the Federal Employee Retroactive Pay Fairness Act, ensuring that federal employees get back pay, but he must also reject the wall as a waste of money.
I support border security; the wall is not about that—it has always been a symbol of racism for Trump and his white supremacist supporters. Surely Greg does not want to be seen as a member of that immoral crowd. He must also do the right thing by 1) joining Representative Bonamici in co-sponsoring H.R. 339, to provide back pay to federal contractors who have been placed on unpaid leave, and 2) continuing to work to persuade others on his side of the aisle to join him in voting to reopen the Government. Thank you.”
