Call to Action: October 12, 2017

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE: PASS CLEAN DREAM ACT NOW

#DefendDACA
#DreamAct

On Sunday, Trump revealed more of his white supremacist agenda, demanding that Congress accept his anti-immigrant wish list in exchange for allowing Dreamers (less than 10% of undocumented immigrants) to remain in the U.S.

Dreamers grew up and went to school here, speak English, are law-abiding, and are Americans in all but name. DACA represents our government’s promise of safety—which Trump has broken. Threatening them with deportation, much less expelling them en masse, is reprehensible. 80% of Americans, all congressional Democrats and many Republicans agree. Although congressional action has largely stalled, Dreamers deserve a clean Dream Act, rather than being a bargaining chip used by the extreme right to crack down on immigration.

As a last resort, when government funding expires on December 8, Democrats say they may attach the Dream Act to the must-pass budget package necessary to avert a government shutdown.

We must turn this “may” into a “must!”

Tell our MoCs we are counting on them to push for speedy passage in both Houses. Otherwise, they must put colleagues on notice that, when government funding expires on December 8, they will . . .

Vote against any continuing resolution that excludes

a clean Dream Act.

(Leave a message if you can’t get through.)

SAMPLE SCRIPT:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling to express my support for the DREAM Act (HR.3440). I urge you to sign the discharge petition and vote to give those who arrived in the United States as children a path to permanent legal status and eventual citizenship. Thank you.”

**ACTION 2: CALL OUR SENATORS**
(Leave a message if you can’t get through.)

SAMPLE SCRIPT:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. Thank you for your commitment to the Dreamers and the actions you plan on their behalf. I understand that you are working hard to get three bills passed that will protect childhood arrivals—the Dream Act, granting them permanent legal status, the Dreamer Confidentiality Act, to protect their private information, and the Bridge Act, extending DACA for three more years. Please promise that you will, if necessary, attach these bills, without enforcement provisions, to the continuing resolution to keep the government open and that you will vote against any continuing resolution that does not include them. Thank you.”
