DON’T GUT OUR GUN LAWS

#DisarmHate
#StopCCR

What’s the best way to pass an unpopular, highly dangerous gun bill that would gut our country’s gun laws? Hijack a modest bi-partisan proposal that promotes gun safety.

That’s what the Republican leadership in the House is planning – and the vote is expected TODAY, possibly mid-day.

The GOP is desperate to pass “Concealed Carry Reciprocity (CCR),” the gun lobby’s top priority legislation. It would eviscerate state gun laws and make it easy for people with dangerous histories and no training to carry hidden, loaded guns in public across the country. https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/38/text

So, GOP leadership may bundle CCR with a modest proposal to improve our background check system, called the “Fix NICS Act,” which is favored with a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

With hate crimes on the rise and white supremacists marching with assault rifles, this is no time to gut our nation’s gun laws!

Congressmen DeFazio, Schrader and Walden all co-sponsored and voted for a similar bill in 2011; Walden is a co-sponsor of this year’s CCR bill. However, due to constituent pressure, DeFazio has CHANGED HIS POSITION – let’s thank him, and encourage Schrader and Walden to do the same.

We must make it clear that we’re counting on our Members of Congress to protect our gun safety laws.

Where’s Walden!?

**ACTION 1: Call Congressman Walden**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am very concerned about the Concealed Carry Reciprocity bill. I am deeply disappointed that the Congressman is a co-sponsor of this bill and has supported similar bills in the past. Gun safety is critical issue to his constituents. Can I count on him to vote NO on Concealed Carry Reciprocity? Thank you.”

**ACTION 2: Call both of our Senators**
(or leave a voice mail)

SAMPLE SCRIPT:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am very concerned about the Concealed Carry Reciprocity bill, which would gut Oregon’s gun laws by forcing us to recognize concealed carry standards of other states. Now that this bill may get bundled with one to fix our background check system, it’s no less dangerous. I’d like to thank the Senator for advocating for common sense gun laws in previous years. Can I count on the Senator to vote NO on Concealed Carry Reciprocity, regardless of how its bundled? Thank you.”
