CALL TO ACTION #955: Stop Trump’s Plague (July 1, 2020)
125 Days
Until the November 3rd Election
Our Recommendations for November
What Voting Blue means to us: We Steering Committee members are pragmatic progressives with no “purity or litmus tests” for our key issues. Rather, we will support the candidate that comes closest to our positions, which means that moderate Joe Biden is much preferred to fascist Donald Trump. And, electability matters; one can’t govern from the sidelines. Sometimes that means backing someone who looks less blue than their opponent, someone who is in better position to be elected and actually help us. Finally, some candidates might want us to maintain our distance for political reasons specific to their constituencies. We respect that, so people we would otherwise recommend may be missing from this list.
That said, here are two no-brainers.
President: Joe Biden
U.S. Senate: Jeff Merkley
Watch this space; more to come.
***Today’s Call To Action***
STOP TRUMP’S PLAGUE
While other developed countries have subdued their C-19 outbreaks, the CDC says the coronavirus epidemic here is out of control. If the trend continues, Dr. Fauci warns that the U.S. could have 100,000 new cases every day. Dr. Fauci has no ax to grind; he does not exaggerate. With 128,000 Americans already dead from the virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) chief has just warned that the “worst is yet to come.”
At first, Trump minimized the risk, then launched an inadequate response. Now he asserts that increased testing is responsible for the uptick in cases; scientific evidence and expert opinion DO NOT support Trump’s fantasy. Instead, the resurgence is linked to his push to “LIBERATE” businesses from lockdowns far too early.
Trump’s actions show no empathy whatsoever for our health and well being. He:
- Invited thousands of supporters indoors for (virus swapping) rallies.
- Stated he wants to reduce coronavirus testing.
- Lied about face masks by claiming they were a symbol mocking him.
- Asked the Supreme Court to terminate Obamacare which would leave 23 million Americans without medical insurance.
Other countries controlled their outbreaks and are now reopening. Our federal government has so botched its C-19 response that Americans are BANNED from going to the EU. Let that sink in: we’ve gone from world leader to third-world status in less than three years under the failed Trump regime.
Trump and his enablers—lame duck Greg Walden, to name one—are responsible for this debacle, including tens of thousands of Americans who have died unnecessarily so far, and unpredictable tens of thousands to come.
To reduce the number of more needless deaths, tell your Members of Congress that the C-19 response should be led by the scientists. Starting right now.
**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR U.S. SENATORS**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS MERKLEY and WYDEN:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].
I am calling because the C-19 pandemic is out of control. Trump’s approach is a failure. We need a national panel of experts, beyond White House control, to guide us. It’s already too late for 130,000 Americans. I’m asking the Senator to demand change now and push to pass the HEROES Act ASAP.
SENATOR JEFF MERKLEY

**ACTION TWO: CALL COMPLICIT GREG WALDEN**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code].
I am calling to demand that Greg Walden uphold his oath of office and do his job, to stop enabling incompetent Donald Trump. The C-19 pandemic is out of control. Trump’s so-called “approach” is a failure. We need a national panel of experts, beyond White House control, to guide us. It’s already too late for 130,000 Americans. I demand a change now. Tell Greg to argue for staying in session and getting the job done.
To remain silent on all of this is a moral outrage. If that’s Greg’s decision, I call on him to resign his office effective immediately.
Where’s Walden? History is watching; Greg’s legacy is at stake.
Thank you.”

Ongoing every Monday, Wednesday and Friday
#MyORHealth Support is available for Oregon’s “helpers”
Lines for Life has created a Virtual Wellness Room to offer support to helpers, mental health professionals, first responders, social workers and anyone considered an essential worker during the COVID-19 pandemic in Oregon. Each check-in call will have a facilitator to guide the conversation.
“We at Lines for Life want to thank you for all the work you do to keep our communities safe,” the organization said. “We are offering a place for helpers to exchange stories of hope and areas of need. We especially want to hear what things are coming up for you personally and explore how we can cheer one another on to continue the good work you are already doing. We ultimately want to create space to breathe out stress and breathe in hope.”
The meetings are held using Zoom conference calls from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at this link: https://zoom.us/j/4848426773. Please share this invite with anyone in your network of Oregon helpers.
