CALL TO ACTION #818: Defund Hate; Impeach Hatred (December 9, 2019)

329 Days

Until the 2020 Election

DEFUND HATE

IMPEACH HATRED

We know that separation and detention cause profound trauma in children. We know that migrants arriving at our southern border, especially families and children, are particularly vulnerable to illness and harm.

Yet, so far in 2019, 69,550 children have been held in immigration jails. During the same period, fifteen people have died in Federal detention, including 6 children. One 16-year-old boy had no welfare checks after being quarantined with the flu and a 103-degree fever.

Asylum seekers are turned away to await hearings in dangerous Mexican camps with no resources, often for months. Immigrants will now be denied access to benefits like food stamps, Medicaid and housing assistance.

Meanwhile, Trump’s immigration policy architect, Stephen Miller, is pushing for “fast-track” immigration for white Europeans.

The immigration policies of this administration are racist and xenophobic, designed to deter immigration by poor, brown people from Central America through cruelty. They are carried out by ICE and CBP, and financially benefit profiteers.

Our members of Congress must support impeachment to end this nightmare administration. They must also work to defund hate by limiting CBP and ICE funding, and providing strong protections to prevent abuse at detention facilities.

Cut ICE and CBP Funding!

Protect Immigrants!

Impeach Trump!

**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR SENATORS**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS MERKLEY AND WYDEN:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling today . . .

. . . to ask that that the Senator make sure that the 2020 budget defunds hate.  There must be no increased funding for ICE or CBP or a border wall. Any funding bill must depend on humanitarian safeguards for immigrants, containing language that prevents moving money from other agencies to fund ICE or CBP. I am also asking him to hold this corrupt and racist President to account and support impeachment in the Senate.

Thank you.”

SENATOR JEFF MERKLEY

**ACTION TWO: CALL COMPLICIT GREG WALDEN**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling today . . .

. . . to ask that Greg Walden put people and country before party and Trump, and make sure that the 2020 budget defunds hate.  There must be no increased funding for ICE or CBP or a border wall. Any funding bill must depend on humanitarian safeguards for immigrants, containing language that prevents moving money from other agencies to fund ICE or CBP. I am also asking Greg to face the facts, to hold this corrupt racist President accountable, and to support impeachment in the House and conviction in the Senate.

Through his actions and inactions, Greg continues to signal his full support for trumpism, regardless of how much damage Trump is doing to our democracy and to world stability. Know that we are still here and will continue working to flip ORD2 Blue in 2020.

Thank you.”

COMPLICIT GREG WALDEN

**ACTION THREE: FILE A COMPLAINT AGAINST ATTORNEY GENERAL BARR**

Attorney General Barr lied to the American public, to the courts, and to Congress about the substance of the Mueller report and about the DOJ spying on Trump’s 2016 campaign. He also refused to recuse himself from the Ukraine matter, tried to bury the whistleblower complaint, asserted claims of “absolute immunity” to prevent the production of witnesses and documents demanded by Congress, violated his oath to the Constitution, and has actively worked to undermine the rule of law and the integrity of the 2020 election.

These actions violate Rules 1.7 (Conflict of Interest), 4.1 (Truthfulness), 8.4 (Misconduct), and the Principles of Professionalism.  File a misconduct complaint through the Virginia State Bar’s online form here. You can also call the Virginia State Bar Intake Office at (804) 775-0570 and use the suggested language above as a phone script.
