SENATE: KEEP US IN NATO
Trump has repeatedly told advisers that he wants to withdraw from NATO. Trump has a history of making good on threats and there are few things Putin wants more than a NATO break-up and an end to post World War II peace.
Trump may have the legal authority. The courts have been reluctant to limit the President’s power to withdraw from treaties. This makes the issue more political than legal.
Congress must make crystal clear that it opposes leaving NATO. The Joint Resolution introduced in the last Congress (SJRes62/HRes 256) stalled in the Senate. It must be reintroduced to:
- Formalize congressional opposition to any withdrawal from NATO
- Require the advice and consent of the Senate to modify or terminate the treaty
- Authorize litigation to advance the Senate’s constitutional authority
Protecting NATO should be non-partisan—Where’s Walden on this issue? Exiting has no visible support among the military.
Trump’s cozy relationship with Russia (five private conversations between Trump and Putin), the Mueller probe into Trump-Russia collusion, and the government shutdown are destabilizing enough. We cannot afford a world without NATO.
Protect the NATO Alliance!
**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR SENATORS**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS MERKLEY AND WYDEN:
“My name is [–] and I live in [town/city], [zip code]. I am very worried about Trump’s threat to leave NATO. I want Senator [—] to work for passage of SJ Res 62 to make crystal clear the Senate’s opposition to withdrawal from NATO and to authorize a lawsuit if Trump acts to do so. Thank you.”
