Call to Action: January 3, 2019
Today is the Day! BLUE HOUSE!
WE WANT A NEW ROLE FOR CONGRESS
Rejoice, we have a new Congress!
It’s diverse, progressive, and strengthened by the new members’ personal struggles as ordinary Americans. The long-term goal of this new Congress must be to restore trust in government as a tool to fairly solve the problems of typical Americans. Ways to win that trust include:
- Be transparent and honest.
- Use evidence, reason and science.
- Connect decisions to values including fairness, equality, truth.
- Be inclusive – and call out Trump’s tribal divisiveness.
- Hold hearings, to educate and inform public discussion.
- Pick issues of concern to most Americans.
- Defend regulations as protections for all.
- Demonstrate the value of compromise.
- Address the deficit ballooning from Trump’s tax cut.
- Prepare for a state of emergency which would give the president extraordinary powers.
Today, the new Congress plans to vote on a budget to end the shutdown. It must have no new money for a border wall. Then, the new Congress will offer its first bill, HR 1, a sweeping election reform measure designed to get dark money out of politics and strengthen voting rights.
Track your Members of Congress and give them feedback, often. They represent us!
Never Forget!

Call Congress!
Tell them we expect results in 2019!

**ACTION TWO: CALL OUR SENATORS**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS WYDEN AND MERKLEY:
“My name is [Name]. I am a constituent and I and live in [town/city], ZIP code [number]. I am calling because we need a Congress that can work for all of us. I ask that as a US Senator you help restore the public’s trust in a Congress as an institution that can solve the problems of typical Americans, not just pander to the rich. You can start to do that by 1) reopening the government with no money for Trump’s fear-mongering and ineffective wall 2) working to pass the election reforms in HR-1 in the Senate and 3) calling for investigations about the abuse and deaths of children detained by the US at the border.”
