Call to Action: October 1, 2018

DAYS UNTIL BALLOTS MAILED: 16

DAYS UNTIL BALLOTS DUE: 36

PROTECT MIGRANT CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

That this administration champions Brett Kavanaugh despite allegations of sexual assault is no surprise.  Their disdain extends to the enactment of immigration policies which target vulnerable women and children.  It is a toxic combination of misogyny and racism.

Jeff Sessions has slammed the door on victims of domestic violence seeking asylum in this country.

There are now over 13,000 children held in immigration jails.  Possible sponsors are being deterred by threats of deportation. Trump is moving to gut the Flores agreement which provides protections for detained migrant children and now he has enlarged an unlicensed, for-profit camp to hold 3,800 – housing 20 to a tent.  They are being removed from state licensed, monitored shelters and shipped to Texas in the dead of night.

Documented abuses in unregulated youth migrant detention facilities are rife, including physical, emotional and sexual abuse, and medical neglect.  Abuse, incarceration and family separation can cause children permanent psychological damage.

Where’s Complicit Greg Walden?

From the Malheur Enterprise in June of this year (emphasis added):

Walden issued his short written statement to the Malheur Enterprise as a national furor unfolded over images and reports of children being taken from parents and housed in compounds formed by chain link fences. The Trump administration since April has been executing a “zero tolerance” policy for those crossing into the U.S. illegally, moving to prosecute them criminally.

Walden in his statement didn’t specifically address that policy, enunciated by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.”

These actions are taken in our name not to make us safer, but because under this regime women and children of color have been made into targets of hatred and fear.

End harmful and shameful detention policies!
