WE CAN BEGIN TO CONTROL MAN-MADE DISASTERS
Trump denies climate change. The intensity and frequency of hurricanes, floods and wildfires are directly related to climate change. This increase in the destructive power of storms and fires has created ever more devastating man-made climate-related disasters. Insufficient, often callous government responses to disasters have added to the hardship of people caught in their path, particularly if they are people of color.
Trump denied the terrible death toll of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and flippantly tossed a few paper towels to the survivors. He diverted $9.8 million in disaster relief funds from FEMA to ICE to fund more for-profit internment camps for Central American families and children.
Trump’s racist immigration policy is causing a man-made disaster and he is defunding FEMA to support it.
Trump enacts policies through executive orders and memos. Since the Republican majority Congress – and demonstrably Greg Walden – has no desire to provide oversight, vital issues will be decided through court challenges.
