Call to Action: April 11, 2018

PROTECT OUR ELECTIONS

#ProtectOurElections
#Elections2018

To change Congress, our votes must count.

The integrity of our elections is being assaulted by cyberattacks on voting systems and targeted, manipulative political ads on social media.

Voting machines are vulnerable:
in 2016 Russia hacked election systems in at least 21 states (and will try again in 2018)
the Senate Intelligence Committee and cybersecurity experts recommend moving to paper ballots
20% of voters use machines with no paper trail
current funding is not enough to update all voting machines

Social media can be manipulated:
Cambridge Analytica, employed by the Trump campaign, secretly gathered 87 million Facebook users’ data to develop profiles for producing targeted ads aimed at influencing or suppressing votes in the 2016 election.
During 2016, Russian bot farms spread propaganda content and ads on Facebook that reached millions of users.

The Election Security Act and The Secure Elections Act give states funding for audits and to move to paper ballots. The Honest Ads Act requires payment disclosure for digital political ads.

These bills are all stuck in Committee.

Our MOC’s must do everything they can to protect our elections and bring these bills to a vote.

Protect Our Elections and Democracy!

**ACTION 1: Call Complicit Greg Walden and our Senators**
(Leave a message if you can’t get through.)

SAMPLE SCRIPT for Complicit Greg Walden:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent and voter from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling because the integrity of our elections is in jeopardy. Russia has spread disinformation online and hacked our voting systems. We know they will try again in 2018. Please tell the Mr. Walden to put country before party and protect our elections by endorsing both the Election Security Act (H.R. 5011) and the Honest Ads Act (H.R. 4077) and pushing for their passage. Thank you.”

SAMPLE SCRIPT for Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent and voter from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling because the integrity of our elections is in jeopardy. Russia has spread disinformation online and hacked our voting systems. We know they will try again in 2018. Please tell the Senator to protect our elections by endorsing both the Secure Elections Act (S. 2261) and the Honest Ads Act (S. 1989) and pushing for their passage. Thank you.”
