Call to Action: February 25, 2018

FIX DEMOCRACY AND END GUN VIOLENCE

#EndGunViolence
#NeverAgain

Americans want stronger gun laws. In fact, 97% of voters support universal background checks on all gun sales; gun owners agree by 97%. And 66% of Americans say they support stricter gun laws in general, according to a Quinnipiac poll conducted after the Florida massacre. “If you think Americans are largely unmoved by the mass shootings, you should think again,” said a Quinnipiac poll director. Perhaps surprisingly, support has increased most among independent voters, men, and whites with no college degree.

A student whose sister died in the Parkland shooting asked his Congressman: “If a majority of Americans support stricter gun control regulations, but our elected officials …. have done nothing, does that mean our democracy is broken?” Yes, was the Congressman’s answer “ . . . our democracy is a little broken.”

But Trump’s extremism is inspiring those who oppose him to revitalize our democracy. Across America, people are protesting his agenda by donating time and money, fighting gerrymandering and voting restrictions, and most importantly by casting ballots. It’s working, even in Texas.

But can it impact gun legislation? Common sense measures can win support in this environment including . . .

Banning the weapons of war!

Banning high capacity magazines!

Funding gun violence research!

**ACTION 1: Call #Complicit Greg Walden and our Senators**
(Leave a message if you can’t get through.)

SAMPLE SCRIPT for NRA Complicit Greg Walden:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent and voter from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am disgusted that the Greg Walden has received donations from the NRA and appalled by his inaction in the face of gun violence. I DEMAND that he put people before party and the gun lobby, stand up to the NRA and pass comprehensive gun safety legislation NOW! Start with passing an assault weapons ban, requiring universal background checks on all gun sales, and funding gun violence research… and don’t stop until we have laws on the books that will keep our country and our children safe. Thank you.”

SAMPLE SCRIPT for Senators Merkley and Wyden:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent and voter from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I would like to thank the Senator for his support for common sense gun regulation, including his commitment to BLOCK the Concealed Carry Reciprocity bill. However, the time for incremental change is over. I demand the Senator stand up to the NRA and pass comprehensive gun safety legislation now. Start with passing an assault weapons ban, requiring universal background checks on all gun sales, and funding gun violence research… and don’t stop until we have laws on the books that will keep our country and our children safe. Thank you.”
