DON’T CUT MEDICARE AND SOCIAL SECURITY

#ProtectMedicaid

The government runs out of money on September 30th. Congress hasn’t passed a budget – risking government shutdown. Congress must get its financial house in order.

The budget process is bankrupt:
• The House Budget Committee passed radical cuts to Medicare, Social Security and non-military spending to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy and a border wall http://n.pr/2uJd415.
• Democrats may not hold together, as they did on the ACA, putting vital programs at risk http://politi.co/2uWNftK .
• Republicans aim to pass a budget the same way the tried to repeal the ACA – via reconciliation, allowing them to pass tax cuts with only 50 votes, paid for by slashing our safety net http://cnn.it/2uIEVyf.

Congress should abandon the budget process and instead pass a clean continuing resolution (CR) maintaining current funding levels across the board. A clean CR:
Protects Medicare, Social Security and safety net programs,
Prevents a radical rewrite of the tax code and border wall funding
Preserves funding for vital programs like the EPA

Our MoCs must fight hard for a clean CR for FY 2018. We must protect our safety net and vital programs.

The fight to save the ACA was only the beginning.

The House budget slashes safety net spending and boosts military spending, but arguably the most important thing it does is serve as a vehicle for tax overhaul.
