SHUT DOWN TRUMP’S SHAM ELECTION COMMISSION
There are many problems with America’s voting procedures:
— decreased access to the ballot box
–– lack of security of electronic ballots and susceptibility to hacking
— felons’ disenfranchisement
— Supreme Court’s gutting of Voting Rights Act
— low voter turnout
But widespread voter fraud is not one of them http://wapo.st/2tSpZ03, http://wapo.st/2vcgX1V, http://bit.ly/2udVWPR
Nevertheless, Trump created a presidential commission to investigate just that, made up largely of voter suppression advocates in order to:
— provide support for Trump’s unsubstantiated claim that he lost the popular vote because 3-5 million people voted illegally
— create the impression that fraud is widespread so Republican-run states can make registering and voting ever more difficult
— develop lists of allegedly questionable voters to be purged from the voting rolls.
Although many states have refused to provide the voter information requested (http://cnn.it/2sGPdNs), in response, numerous voters sought removal from the rolls http://nbcnews.to/2u2Ivnx. And now, Sen. Wyden and others are decrying the commission’s disclosure of personal information about citizens who criticized it http://bit.ly/2tRKD0w.
Our Democratic MoCs have introduced the Vote by Mail Act (S.1231), sponsored by Senator Wyden, that will allow all eligible voters to vote by mail in federal elections and will amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to provide for automatic voter registration. But they must do even more . . .
Fight to dismantle the “voter suppression” commission!
**ACTION 1: CALL SENATORS MERKLEY AND WYDEN (if you can’t call during business hours, leave a voice mail!)**
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon. Thank you for your strong support for voting rights and for speaking out against the growing tide of voter suppression. I’m calling to express serious concerns about Trump’s voter fraud commission. This commission is a sham set up to investigate a non-existent problem in order to create stricter voting requirements and suppress the vote. I’m urging you to denounce its problematic activities and call for it to be dismantled. Please do all that you can to get rid of Trump’s “voter suppression” commission.”
[To Sen. Wyden: “Thank you as well for sponsoring the Vote by Mail Act of 2017 and for speaking out against the outrageous actions of this sham commission for publishing private data about its critics.”]
**ACTION 2: CALL CONGRESSMAN WALDEN (if you can’t call during business hours, leave a voice mail!)**
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon. I’m calling to express serious concerns about Trump’s voter fraud commission. This commission is a sham set up to investigate a non-existent problem in order to create stricter voting requirements and suppress the vote. I’m urging you to denounce its problematic activities and call for it to be dismantled. Please put country ahead of the GOP party and do all that you can to get rid of Trump’s “voter suppression” commission.Your close alliance with Trump is not playing well in many parts of OR CD2.”
