CONGRESS MUST STOP TRUMP’S RUSH TO WAR WITH IRAN
Responding to drone attacks on Saudi oil fields, for which Yemeni rebels took credit, Trump tweeted he’s “locked and loaded,” ready to unilaterally move against Iran on Saudis’ behalf; and Pompeo called it “an act of war”—although no American property destroyed or lives lost. Yesterday, Trump ordered new sanctions.
We’re on brink of war with Iran for the second time in three months because Trump:
- withdrew from successful Iran nuclear deal, escalating economic sanctions on Iran in hopes of forcing Iran back to the negotiating table
- vetoed Congressional attempts to end support for Saudi-UAE war in Yemen
- claims he doesn’t need congressional approval to strike Iran
This week Congress begins conferencing House and Senate versions of the National Security Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The House version contains a bipartisan supported amendment preventing war with Iran absent Congressional authorization, except in response to an attack on America. The Senate’s vote—50-40—fell short of 60 needed to pass.
To prevent a senseless war, Congress must clearly reclaim its constitutional authority over war and peace by (1) immediately passing Prevention of Unconstitutional War with Iran Act (H.R.2354/S.1039) and (2) ensuring that the NDAA’s conference report retains the House’s bipartisan amendment containing similar language.
