CALL TO ACTION #1057: Democracy Requires Accountability (December 2, 2020)

34 Days until the Senate Runoff Election in Georgia!

(Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossof)

See Action Three below for ways to HELP these two guys!

***CALL TO ACTION***

Democracy Requires Accountability

Donald Trump committed crimes that inflicted great damage to our democracy — for his personal benefit. He and his cronies must be held accountable.  At the least, there must be Congressional investigations.  This is not revenge; failure to act would be legislative malpractice. No one is above the law.

Trump has abused the power of the Presidency to obstruct justice, attack political opponents and defraud the United States. We can no longer assume that future Presidents will not do otherwise. Ignoring or forgiving the criminal actions of this administration would almost guarantee another would-be autocrat will attempt to follow Trump’s playbook.

Demand that Congress begin enacting reforms to close-down the loopholes Trump exploited.

The House has already begun by passing the For The People Act which would strengthen ethics rules and expand voting rights.  The Protecting Our Democracy Act, aiming to prevent Presidential abuses, restore our system of checks and balances, strengthen accountability and transparency, and protect our elections, is in committee.

If BOTH Warnock and Ossoff win their Georgia Senate run-offs, Mitch McConnell will lose control of the Senate, freeing this vital legislation from his obstructionist grasp. In other words, Ditch Mitch!

We and our partners across the nation are working to flip the Senate BIG, BOLD, BEAUTIFUL BLUE!

**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR U.S. SENATORS**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATOR MERKLEY AND WYDEN:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].

I want to thank the Senator for the times he has demanded accountability for Trump’s criminal actions, and I’m asking that he support Congressional investigations into Trump’s corrupt activities. To make investigations truly viable, he must also call for rule changes allowing consequences for failure to cooperate with Congress’ oversight role.

I also want to thank him for his support of the For the People Act and for co-sponsoring the Senate version. Please ask him to continue to work for its passage in the Senate and to work for a Senate version of the Protecting Our Democracy Act, currently in the House.

Thank you.”

**ACTION TWO: CALL COMPLICIT GREG WALDEN**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code].

Greg Walden’s silence has enabled Donald Trump to abuse the power of the Presidency to obstruct justice, attack political opponents and defraud the United States. We can no longer assume that any incoming President will not do otherwise. Ignoring or forgiving the criminal actions of this administration would be to hand the next would-be con man or autocrat a blueprint. On Greg’s way out the door, he can finally act to protect the future of our democracy by demanding investigations into Trump’s criminal actions.

If he goes quietly, he will put his final stamp of approval on the Trump administration’s anti-Americanism; history will not be kind.

Thank you.”
