CALL TO ACTION #933: No Justice, No Peace; Demand Congress Denounce Police Brutality (June 1, 2020)
155 Days
Until the November 3rd Election
***Today’s Call To Action***
NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE
DEMAND CONGRESS DENOUNCE POLICE BRUTALITY
George Floyd’s death under the knee of a white police officer in Minneapolis lays bare America’s history of racism, white supremacy, and police brutality. Donald Trump is a racist. He defends armed white supremacists while calling for the murder of black Americans seeking justice for George Floyd. This we cannot abide.
Congress must unequivocally censure Trump. NOW. Any member of Congress who refuses to do so shares responsibility for the consequences of Trump’s racist, violent actions.
Silence is complicity—Where’s Walden?
Police brutality is escalating into police rioting. They are attacking the very people they are supposed to protect. We demand that Congress immediately pass Representatives Ayanna Pressley’s and Ilhan Omar’s resolution to condemn police brutality.
“Riot is the language of the unheard.” (Martin Luther King Jr). Congress, hear us.
“This should not be ‘normal’ in 2020 America. It can’t be ‘normal’. If we want our children to grow up in a nation that lives up to its highest ideals, we can and must be better.” (President Barack Obama). Congress, be better.
“If we are complacent, if we are silent, we are complicit in perpetuating these cycles of violence. None of us can turn away. We all have an obligation to speak out.” (Vice President Joe Biden). Congress, speak out.
Censure Trump
Pass the Pressley-Omar Resolution
NOW!
**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR U.S. SENATORS**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS MERKLEY and WYDEN:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].
George Floyd’s death lays bare America’s history of racism, white supremacy, and police brutality. Trump calls for the murder of black American’s seeking justice for George Floyd. Congress must do two things immediately. Congress must censure Trump and pass Representatives Pressley’s and Omar’s resolution to condemn police brutality. I am counting on the Senator to make these things happen. If Congress does not, they share responsibility for the consequences of these racist actions.
Silence is complicity.
Thank you.”

**ACTION TWO: CALL COMPLICIT GREG WALDEN**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code].
I am NOT counting on Greg Walden to make these things happen. If he continues to march lockstep with his party’s racist policies, then he shares responsibility for the consequences of not shutting down institutional racism and the police brutality it breeds. Perhaps he will surprise me.
In the meantime, silence is complicity.
Thank you.”
