CALL TO ACTION #931: Trump has Seeded a Second Wave of C-19 Cases and Deaths (May 28, 2020)

159 Days

Until the November 3rd Election

***Today’s Call To Action***

TRUMP HAS SEEDED A SECOND WAVE OF

C-19 CASES AND DEATHS

We are all in the pandemic boat. Our shared health interest is to survive, so we help each otherIf we had notmodelers estimate America would have 35 million cases now instead of 1.6 million. C-19 has killed 100,000+ Americans over the last four months and the outbreak is still far from over.

Ignoring expert advice, Donald “Only I can fix it” Trump pushed to “liberate” states (to showcase his armed resisters), declared churches “essential” (to pander to his evangelical base), and pump the economy (to strengthen his only reelection argument).  Trying to reopen prematurely now has the virus circulating in open pubs, pools and pews, ensuring cases and deaths will soar. That’s because 35% of infected people are asymptotic. These are people who look and feel healthy while spreading the virus—a fact lost on low-information (i.e., science-denying) Americans like Trump.

Meanwhile, C-19 is moving into America’s heartland. It spreads in prisons and meat factoriesUnprotected workers then spread the virus through their communities. These are communities with poor medical infrastructure and a higher burden of comorbiditiesSome experts are projecting at least 70,000 more deaths by the end of summer.

Against this frightening backdrop, Trump continues to think only of himself, insisting that schools reopen “ASAP,” and that a traditional “live” GOP convention take place with 50,000 adoring fans present for his reality TV show performance.

This outbreak can be stopped. Countries as diverse as South Korea and Germany have done it and are safely reopening under science-informed leadership.

**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR U.S. SENATORS**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS MERKLEY and WYDEN:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].

Experts warn that prematurely reopening to appease Trump and his armed acolytes is seeding a new wave of cases which may result in 70,000 new deaths by the end of the summer. I ask that the Senator to:

  • Demand that the Administration provide a national plan for testing, tracing and isolating cases.
  • Warn Oregon hospitals to strengthen their systems to handle an outbreak bigger than the one we just saw.

We need to listen to the scientists.

Thank you.”

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code].

Experts warn that prematurely reopening to appease Trump and his armed acolytes is seeding a new wave of cases which may result in 70,000 new deaths by the end of the summer. Tell Greg Walden to wake up and follow the science! He should be:

  • Demanding that the Administration provide a national plan for testing, tracing and isolating cases.
  • Warning hospitals in his congressional district to strengthen their systems to handle an outbreak bigger than the one we just saw.

We need to listen to the scientists, not “my gut says” Donald Trump.

Thank you.”

“We at Lines for Life want to thank you for all the work you do to keep our communities safe,” the organization said. “We are offering a place for helpers to exchange stories of hope and areas of need. We especially want to hear what things are coming up for you personally and explore how we can cheer one another on to continue the good work you are already doing. We ultimately want to create space to breathe out stress and breathe in hope.”

The meetings are held using Zoom conference calls from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at this link: https://zoom.us/j/4848426773. Please share this invite with anyone in your network of Oregon helpers.
