Call to Action: June 5, 2018

STOP TRUMP’S CRUELTY TO THE POOR

Cruelty is at the heart of Trump’s policies toward the poor. While the US leads the developed world in economic inequity, the UN found that his policies appear to be a “systematic attack” on safety net programs that will leave millions deprived of food and healthcare.

Under Trump, four million people lost health insurance, restrictions on payday lenders are being eased, and Medicaid rule changes are hurting the disabled.

Trump’s newest immigration policy separates children from the families seeking asylum at the southern border. The separation is so quick, parents often don’t have an opportunity to say goodbye nor are they told where their children are going. Abrupt separation in childhood results in long-term psychological harm similar to PTSD.

When Puerto Rico was hammered by a hurricane, Trump tweeted: “They want everything done for them.” He boasted only a few people died, while new evidence raises the official count from 64 to between 1,000 and 8,000. Hundreds of homes and businesses are still without power.

As Senator Merkley boldly did this weekend at immigration detention centers, we ask our MOCs to draw attention to Trump’s heartless policies. And don’t forget, GREG WALDEN’S SILENCE MAKES HIM COMPLICIT!
