DEFUND ICE AND CBP HATE
Government spending bills must be passed by September 30th. There could be a shutdown over two immigration issues when it comes to Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Homeland Security funding. We’re watching:
1) Whether to replace the $3.6 billion that Trump diverted to pay for his wall. Our Senators have come out strongly against Trump’s theft of DoD funding. Trump is counting on McConnell to put additional money in the appropriations bills to cover his thefts. McConnell will need 60 votes to pass any funding bill. The Senate and House must refuse to go along with this direct attack on their spending authority.
2) Whether Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will receive even more funding. The DHS announced that it is taking another $171 million from agencies it controls to pay for more detention beds, even though Congress specifically limited the number of people who could be detained. Congress must prohibit DHS from transferring and reprogramming its authority to benefit Trump’s immigration policies. Congress also must fund ICE and DHS at lower levels with tighter controls on how the money can be spent.
