CALL TO ACTION #922: Heroes Act Goes Part Way to Saving Us. Let’s Carry It to the Progressive Finish Line! (May 14, 2020)
173 Days
Until the November 3rd Election
Oregon Primary Election
Ballots are due on May 19, 8:00 p.m.
Postmark DOES NOT COUNT.
TODAY is the recommended DEADLINE TO MAIL your ballot.
Please VOTE!
Track your ballot here.
Don’t delay; study your voter pamphlet, make your decisions, mark your ballot, put it in the Postage Paid envelope, and mail it in or deposit it in a county ballot box (locations) before you lose it under a stack of bills! Urge all of your like-minded friends and family to do the same.
Progressive activism means voting the ENTIRE ballot, including seemingly obscure local boards and commissions, and those pesky initiatives.
Help the BLUE WAVE wash over every level of government!
***Today’s Call To Action***
HEROES ACT GOES PART WAY TO SAVING US
LET’S CARRY IT TO THE PROGRESSIVE FINISH LINE!
Nancy Pelosi released the House’s $3 trillion+ stimulus package yesterday. We thank the leadership for a bill that does so much right: funding for state and local governments; protection for elections and funds for the Post Office; money for testing and contact tracing, subsidies for Medicaid.
That said, we need to call NOW to make some parts more progressive. The vote could be as early as tomorrow.
(1) Provisions for direct payments to people are still weak. The Progressive Caucus wants a three-month guarantee of 100% of pay for people earning below $100,000 that renews automatically until consumer demand returns to pre-pandemic levels. The rationale for this policy include:
- Businesses can keep workers on the payroll and start up without having to re-hire.
- Workers don’t have to search for another job.
- The Progressive Caucus may have the votes for a negotiation with leadership.
(2) Undocumented workers must be included in Medicaid. Everybody needs health insurance to afford care during this pandemic or WE WON’T STOP THE VIRUS.
(3) Eliminate:
- $160 billion tax break for millionaires that was slipped into the CARES Act.
- Expansion of the PPP to business, trade groups and advocacy groups. Our taxpayer dollars should not support lobbyists to lobby Congress.
The House is on the right track, but let’s strengthen this bill before negotiations with the Senate begin.
**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR U.S. SENATORS**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS MERKLEY and WYDEN:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code].
Since the Senate is unlikely to take up another rescue package until June, I am calling to ask the Senator to focus on the Attorney General’s attacks on our justice system. Bill Barr’s decision to drop charges against former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn is a direct assault on the rule of law. Barr says “history is written by the winners.” Might-makes-right isn’t how a democracy should work. Keep up the calls for Barr to resign. I pledge to work hard this election so that Barr will never be seen on the public stage again.
Thank you.”

**ACTION TWO: CALL COMPLICIT GREG WALDEN**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code].
Tell Greg Walden that I called to demand that he support 1) the Progressive Caucus proposal for 100% guaranteed paychecks for people making less than $100,000; 2) Medicaid for undocumented workers; 3) ending the $160 billion tax break for millionaires that was tucked into the CARES Act.
Finally, tell him also to oppose the provision that allows business and trade groups, plus advocacy groups to receive funding under the Paycheck Protection Program. Groups like American Health Insurance Program and the Koch Brothers’ network Stand Together should not get taxpayer money to lobby Congress.
Thank you.”
