CALL TO ACTION #759: Pass a Budget that Defunds Hate (September 16, 2019)
413 Days
Until the 2020 Election
PASS A BUDGET THAT DEFUNDS HATE
It is urgent that Congress passes a budget in order to keep the government funded and operating. But they must ensure the budget does not support this administration’s racist anti-immigration agenda by insisting on:
- Less money for ICE and the CBP. And no money without significant humanitarian safeguards for immigrants. Trump’s budget proposal is seeking an increase of more than $3 billion. More money means more surveillance and raids on immigrant communities, more privatized for-profit immigrant prison camps, more deportation of refugees seeking asylum
- No money for a border wall. Trump wants $8.6 billion more budgeted for his xenophobic boondoggle
- No money for “discretionary appropriations for the DHS”, which oversees the ICE and the CBP budgets. Trump wants $51.7 billion to spend. Without oversight. At his “discretion”
- Protection of services vital to our health and national security. Trump seeks large cuts including 15% to USDA, 31% to EPA and 23% to the State Department
- Language in the budget that will stop Trump from stealing Congressionally allocated funds from other agencies to increase money going to ICE, the wall, or any other anti-immigrant actions
Call your MOC.
Tell them to pass a budget that defunds hate and demands humanitarian safeguards for immigrants.
**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR SENATORS**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS MERKLEY AND WYDEN:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling because . . .
. . . while the Senator works to support impeachment hearings on Trump’s abuses at the border, I am asking that he make sure that any budget, including a short term spending agreement, defunds hate. There must be:
- no increased funding for ICE, the CBP, or a border wall
- humanitarian safeguards for immigrants
- language to stop Trump’s shell game of moving money from other agencies to fund ICE, the wall or any other anti-immigrant actions
Thank you.”
SENATOR JEFF MERKLEY

**ACTION TWO: CALL COMPLICIT GREG WALDEN**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling because . . .
. . . in addition to my expectation and repeated demand that Greg Walden must uphold his oath of office and support impeachment hearings on Trump’s abuses at the border, I am asking that he makes sure that any budget, including a short term spending agreement, defunds hate. There must be:
- no increased funding for ICE or CBP, or a border wall
- humanitarian safeguards for immigrants.
- language to stop Trump’s shell game of moving money from other agencies to fund ICE, the wall or any other anti-immigrant actions.
Through Greg’s actions and inactions — the silence is been deafening— he continues to signal that he fully supports Trump, regardless of how much damage Trump is doing to our democracy and to world stability. Know that we are still here, we will hold him accountable, we are working to flip his seat BLUE — #2020IsNow!
