Call to Action: January 29, 2019

KEEP CALLING AGAINST THE WALL AND FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM

The government has reopened temporarily, giving Congress brief period to improve border security with tools that work—and also tackle the problems of undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers. With Trump’s capitulation, Congressional Dems now set the terms of debate.

The House has already passed legislation funding government—minus Homeland Security—through September 2019, and is proposing funds for:

  • Technological tools to improve security at entry points and along border
  • More border agents and immigration judges

The wall is clearly a non-starter. Like Confederate monuments, it is a racist symbol—completely at odds with the Statue of Liberty which has long welcomed immigrants to our shores, as Senator Merkley has stressed.

As part of the agreement ending the shutdown, the Senate established a bipartisan Conference Committee to negotiate funding for Homeland Security. We must demand that their bill not only mirror House’s language, but also provide permanency for DACA recipients and TPS holders.

Our calls helped end shutdown, but the fight is far from over! We must KEEP CALLING; tell Congress to:

Reject Trump’s wall!

Fund the Government!

Pass Real Immigration Reform!

ACTION ONE: CALL OUR SENATORS

My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling to ask that Senator [–] (1) push for full government funding for the full year with NO money for a wall, (2) tell Conference Committee to focus on real border security problems, rather than Trump’s racist wall, and (3) urge the Conference Committee to create permanency for DACA recipients and TPS holders. Thank you.”
