CALL TO ACTION #891: Why We Vote: For Real Representation, Especially During Crises (April 1, 2020)
215 Days
Until the November 3rd Election
The Consolidated Oregon Indivisible Network (COIN)
Twenty-one Indivisible groups spanning the State of Oregon have signed an open letter to the Governor and the Legislature outlining their priorities – putting people and small businesses first. The Special Session expected to convene THIS WEEK to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic is on hold. We will update you here as new information becomes available.
Here is the link to the letter: COIN Letter
WHY WE VOTE: FOR REAL REPRESENTATION, ESPECIALLY DURING CRISES
We vote for leaders we trust to protect us, irrespective of our race, gender, immigration status, income, or our political philosophy. We vote for leaders who allocate federal government resources to address issues that states and the private sector can’t handle.
Trump’s GOP Senate padded both rescue bills with give-aways to themselves and their donors. They declined to fully fund vote-by-mail or protect the postal service it relies upon. Only oversight can ensure national production and distribution of essential medical supplies, but the Senate adjourned for three weeks and the House plans to follow.
Vote-by-mail and the USPS must be fully funded to
protect our vote.
Adjourning Congress stops oversight, as Trump continues to condition aid on whether we voted for him, and, on whether our governors are nice to him. Quid pro quo, plain and simple. He hates vote-by-mail because he believes it favors Democrats, saying Monday evening:
Of the Dems’ request for more vote-by-mail funding: “They had … levels of voting that, if you ever agreed to it, you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.” (Aaron Blake, Washington Post)
We will not let our members of Congress abandon us to Trump’s whims and vindictiveness. We demand our elected leaders use the power we gave them. We demand they stay at work during the pandemic, to protect our health and our vote. We need Congressional action and oversight to stop Trump from disadvantaging those who don’t support him.
Together
Helping each other
We can save ourselves
**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR U.S. SENATORS**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS MERKLEY and WYDEN:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling today because . . .
While I continue to appreciate everything you do for your constituents, I am disturbed that the Senate adjourned during a pandemic. Today I’m calling to ask you to insist the Senate return to Washington. This Administration cannot be trusted, and without Congress in session there is no oversight.
We also need new legislation to fully fund vote-by-mail and the postal service, to protect and provide access to health care for everyone and to give more financial support to those least able to survive loss of income. As you know, we’re all in this together; every death involves other people having been exposed.
Thank you.”

**ACTION TWO: CALL COMPLICIT GREG WALDEN**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling today because . . .
A pandemic is not the time to recess. Without Congress in session, there can’t be oversight of the use of funds to combat COVID-19 to protect us and our right to vote. We also need new legislation to fully fund vote-by-mail and the postal service, to provide and protect access to health care for everyone, and to give more financial support to those least able to survive loss of income. We’re in this together; every death involves other people having been exposed.
Thank you.”
