AG Barr and Republicans claim that DOJ policy prevents both the indictment of a sitting president and the release of information about someone who is not indicted. But, the chairs of six House committees and Senator Feinstein, ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, have demanded that Barr release Muller’s entire report to Congress.
“To maintain that a sitting president cannot be indicted, and then to withhold evidence of wrongdoing from Congress because the president will not be charged, is to convert department policy into the means for a cover-up,” the House members wrote. Senator Feinstein noted that the DOJ released extensive background information about the Clinton investigation, even though she was never indicted: “The attorney general cannot take the position that it will only produce material to Congress when requested by Republicans.”
Trump has repeatedly:
- Lied about his extensive dealings with the Kremlin
- Taken positions favorable to Russia and against American interests
- Stated he believes Putin instead of the collective judgment of the US intelligence community
- Openly obstructed justice by firing Comey, tampering with witnesses by threats and hints of pardons, and impugning the credibility of the DOJ/FBI.
