ENFORCE OUR GUN SAFETY LAWS
The Las Vegas mass shooting that killed 59 and injured over 500 was especially deadly because the shooter used bump stocks, which turn semiautomatic weapons into automatic weapons. Since automatic weapons are illegal, bump stocks must be made illegal as well.
Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have expressed support for banning bump stocks. Congressman Walden questioned the need for anybody to modify their rifles into something resembling a fully automatic weapon. Even Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX) has assigned staff to research bump stocks and stated he would consider hearings on the issue.
Democrats have introduced companion bills H.R. 3947 (https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/3947/text) and S.1916 (https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-bill/1916) to ban bump stocks; all of our Democratic MoC support them. A similar bill, H.R 3999 (https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/3999), has bipartisan support. Yet this legislation is stalled. Meanwhile, neither Walden nor Schrader has committed to opposing dangerous bills that would gut our gun laws: Concealed Carry Reciprocity (HR 38) (https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/38) and the SHARE Act which would deregulate silencers (HR 3668 https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/3668).
As lead sponsor of the senate bill Senator Feinstein commented,
“The only reason to modify a gun is to kill as many people as possible in as short a time as possible.”
Sensible Gun Regulation NOW!
**ACTION: CALL BOTH OUR SENATORS and CONGRESSMAN WALDEN**
SAMPLE SCRIPT for both Senators:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon, [zip code]. Thank you supporting S.1916 to ban bump stocks. Please call for committee hearings and a vote on this important legislation. We must close the bump stock loophole.”
SAMPLE SCRIPT for Walden:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon, [zip code]. Congressman Walden questioned the need for anybody to be able to modify their rifles into something resembling a fully automatic weapon. But he has not cosponsored any legislation addressing bump stocks. I’m asking that he put people before the NRA and cosponsor HR. 3947 or 3999 to ban bump stocks. We must close the bump stock loophole.”
