***Today’s Call To Action***

“IN ORDER TO HEAL AS A NATION, WE MUST FIX WHAT IS BROKEN”

(CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS)

Racism, police brutality and COVID-19 are all public health crises. All three disproportionately impact black communities because systemic racism is embedded in US culture. In this moment, after witnessing the murders of George Floyd and so many others, we all join together to demand change. Silence is complicity.

Police responded brutally to peaceful protesters demanding racial justice, although they remained passive in response to armed Trump supporters invading state capitols to demand premature re-opening. Trump responded with racist language, threatened to use the military to suppress peaceful protests, and used unidentifiable armed men who might be federal agents or might be mercenaries or militia.

We must name the problem, speak truth to power, and ACT to bring REAL CHANGE. Congressional Democrats unveiled the Justice in Policing Act of 2020, promising future bills to further remedy racial injustices. Both Houses must pass the Murphy/Schumer bill requiring federal agents to be identifiable, and the Senate must pass the Heroes Act. We ask all Democrats to co-sponsor and publicly advocate for these bills’ immediate passage.

We demand that public health and safety replace racism and police brutality.

We join together, peacefully, for racial justice.

Silence is not an option.

**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR U.S. SENATORS**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS MERKLEY and WYDEN:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code].

Systemic racism, police brutality, and COVID-19 have combined in this moment to highlight the need to acknowledge our history and act to change the future. I urge the Senator to co-sponsor and advocate for immediate passage of The Justice in Policing Act of 2020, the Murphy/Schumer bill requiring federal agents to be identifiable, and passage of the HEROES Act in the Senate.

Also, please remind him to call for both Barr’s and Trump’s resignation. Publicly. Loudly. Every day.

Thank you.”

**ACTION TWO: CALL COMPLICIT GREG WALDEN**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code].

Systemic racism, police brutality, and COVID-19 have combined in this moment to highlight the need to acknowledge our history and act to change the future. These are not partisan issues; they are human issues.

To remain silent now, as Greg continues to do, is a moral outrage. If that is his decision, I call on him to resign his office effective immediately.

If he decides to do the right thing, then tell him to support and advocate for the immediate passage of The Justice in Policing Act of 2020, the Murphy/Schumer bill requiring federal agents to be identifiable, and passage of the Heroes Act in the Senate.

History is watching; Greg’s legacy is at stake. Fascist sympathizer or American patriot?

Thank you.”

“We at Lines for Life want to thank you for all the work you do to keep our communities safe,” the organization said. “We are offering a place for helpers to exchange stories of hope and areas of need. We especially want to hear what things are coming up for you personally and explore how we can cheer one another on to continue the good work you are already doing. We ultimately want to create space to breathe out stress and breathe in hope.”

The meetings are held using Zoom conference calls from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at this link: https://zoom.us/j/4848426773. Please share this invite with anyone in your network of Oregon helpers.
