TRUMP BREAKS ANOTHER
AMERICAN PROMISE
Yesterday’s Turkish attack on Kurdistan demonstrates that Trump’s America will betray a staunch ally even if it deeply erodes our own national security.
On Sunday, Trump reportedly gave Turkish dictator Erdoğan permission to launch the war and then ordered US troops out of the region. This is just the latest American commitment Trump has broken. Others include the Climate Accord, the deal with Iran, and a nuclear treaty with Russia.
He also withheld vital military aid to Ukraine, which is fighting Russia, as he demanded dirt on a political opponent.
Trump’s move in Kurdistan destroys a promising US strategy to establish a “safe zone” between Turkey and Kurdistan. It also threatens America’s own national security in two ways:
- Trump has shown that the US will abandon its commitments even to an ally who fought shoulder to shoulder with US troops
- It further destabilizes a volatile region. Antiterrorism experts expect the invasion will free thousands of ISIS fighters now held in Kurdish prisons
Where’s Walden? Lukewarm talk; no action.
Forming a coalition to fight any threat will be almost impossible after this. No American should be comfortable with these erratic, dangerous and dishonorable acts. This one is already killing people who trusted us to protect them.
