CONGRESS MUST RECLAIM ITS POWERS
OVERRIDE THE VETO
The U.S. Constitution gives Congress the power of the purse. But Trump is doing everything he can to seize that power in order to build his monument to racism – the border wall — using money that Congress refuses to give him.
Trump first tried to extort his own Republican-led Congress by shutting down the Government for an unprecedented 35 days.
When that failed, and veto-proof majorities in both houses of Congress passed the budget—including a pittance for border barriers—Trump declared his fake “emergency,” citing the National Emergencies Act (NEA), claiming that it authorizes him to spend unappropriated funds for his wall.
Bipartisan majorities in both houses of Congress voted to revoke the “trumped-up” emergency, underscoring their resistance to Trump’s power grab. Now we must press the Senate and the House to override Trump’s veto.
The intent of Congress repeatedly denying Trump funds for the wall is clear, overriding any argument that Trump is acting within the authority of the NEA. The intent of the American people – two-thirds of whom oppose the emergency declaration – is also clear.
