Trump has refused to concede his irrefutable election loss. An anonymous senior Republican official recently asked, “What is the downside for humoring him?” 

Perhaps there’s a political upside for the Republicans willing to play along with Trump’s narcissistic fantasy. But for the health, safety, and national security of the American people, there’s a huge downside. Trump’s unprecedented sabotage of the transition process puts us all at risk.

• GSA Administrator Emily Murphy is a political appointee with a history of covering for Trump. She’s responsible for writing the ascertainment letter which authorizes Biden to begin an official transition to office. She hasn’t. 
• Preventing Biden access to security agencies and officials, classified intelligence and military briefings is a threat to national security. Delaying the security clearance process means a delay in filling sensitive posts.
• Not allowing Biden to work with Trump’s coronavirus task force on possible vaccine distribution strategies will make the implementation of a plan more difficult and slower, resulting in more COVID-19 deaths.

States will certify their votes. Congress will officially declare Biden President-elect. Trump and his Republican enablers won’t prevent that. But they can prevent a successful transition unless Murphy is forced to do her job.
