CALL TO ACTION #723: This Climate Demands Leaders (July 17, 2019)
THIS CLIMATE DEMANDS LEADERS
This summer, heat records are being set everywhere from Maine to San Francisco. Climate change is scorching Europe in triple-digit heat but in the US, it’s only 90 . . . in Anchorage, Alaska.
In DC, a month’s worth of rain fell in an hour. Much of the Midwest’s farmland is unplanted because the soil is slop.
Three Members of Congress have offered a “sense of the Congress” resolution, to rebrand climate destruction a “climate emergency.”
It’s an indictment of Congress that this simple measure is unlikely to survive – thanks to a decade of well-funded obfuscation and two years of Trump muzzling climate science in our government.
We are confronting many other problems, including a racist president working hard to transform the US into a Nazi Germany-like nation.
But since the climate is everywhere, its fingerprints are everywhere. Take immigration, which is straining resources on America’s southern border.
The record number of migrating families come from Central America, a region which has seen coffee crops and entire farms turn to dust in a relentless five-year drought.
This time requires great leaders. Our Senators and Representatives must lead.
They must call for an impeachment inquiry and address the climate crisis head-on.
**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR SENATORS**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS WYDEN AND MERKLEY:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling for two reasons.
First, you must call for impeachment. Today. Your continuing failure to do so – in the face of obvious and massive evidence of obstruction of justice, child cruelty, and inflaming racism – is disgraceful. Your constituents are counting on you. Please do not let us down.
Second, you must endorse the effort to classify climate chaos as an emergency, HR. Con. Res. 52. Focusing on this “emergency” will also broaden the conversation about the causes of Central American migration, which is happening, in part, due to the suffering caused by the fifth year of drought. We need a leader on this too.
Thank you.”

**ACTION TWO: CALL COMPLICIT GREG WALDEN**
SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling for two reasons.
First, I demand that you call for Trump’s impeachment. Today. Your continuing failure to do so – in the face of obvious and massive evidence of obstruction of justice, child cruelty, and racism – is disgraceful. Your constituents are counting on you. Please do not let us down.

Through Greg Walden’s actions and inactions—his silence has been deafening—he appears to fully support Trump, regardless of how much damage Trump is doing to our democracy and to world stability. Know that we are still here, we will hold him accountable, we are working to flip his seat BLUE — #2020IsNow!
