HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT!

THAT INCLUDES CAGED REFUGEES AND PRISONERS!

People are interconnected by complex social webs; we must treat other people’s health with the same urgency we feel for our family’s. Whether it’s undocumented neighbors who provide vital services but must work through illness because denied relief, or people held in jails, prisons, or ICE detention centers, their exposure to COVID-19 fuels the pandemic, putting everyone at risk

It’s most obvious in our mistreatment of immigrants in ICE facilities and others incarcerated in jails and prisons:

  • The CARES Act excludes tens of millions of immigrants from COVID-19 testing and care, cash and benefits. That’s inhumane. Cruelty is the policy.
  • There are 34,000+ immigrants in ICE custody and 1.6 million in overcrowded state and federal prisons. Exposure there may turn confinement into death sentences.

The Emergency Community Supervision Act (S. 3579/HR 6400)—mandating the release of those medically vulnerable, 50+and with short remaining sentences—and the Coronavirus Immigrant Families Protection Act—providing universal access to COVID-19 testing, treatment and cash relief to many undocumented Americans—are good first steps, but much more is needed.

Gaining ground on this pandemic requires that Congress gets back to work.

Close the C-19 Response Gaps!

Drastically Reduce Jail and Prison Populations!

Stop ICE Enforcement! Release Immigrant Children and Asylum Seekers!

**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR U.S. SENATORS**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS MERKLEY and WYDEN:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling today because . . .

We are all interconnected. The greater the C-19 exposure of our undocumented neighbors, those held in jails, prisons, or ICE detention fuels the pandemic, and making everyone’s life more precarious. Congress must reconvene to protect these vulnerable groups. While the Senator’s sponsorship of the Coronavirus Immigrant Families Protection Act is a good first step, Congress should:

  • Completely close the gaps in relief between immigrants and non-immigrants
  • Force ICE to stop immigration enforcement, parole as many detainees as possible, and release all children and their families from custody
  • Drastically reduce the jail and prison population by co-sponsoring and pushing for passage of the Emergency Community Supervision Act.

Thank you.”

**ACTION TWO: CALL COMPLICIT GREG WALDEN**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling today because . . .

We are all interconnected. The greater the C-19 exposure of our undocumented neighbors, those held in jails, prisons, or ICE detention fuels the pandemic, and making everyone’s life more precarious. Congress must reconvene to protect these vulnerable groups. Please tell Greg Walden that he should support bills that:

  • Completely close the gaps in relief between immigrants and non-immigrants
  • Force ICE to stop immigration enforcement, parole as many detainees as possible, and release all children and their families from custody
  • Drastically reduce the jail and prison population by co-sponsoring and pushing for passage of the Emergency Community Supervision Act.

Thank you.”
