*** SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT ***

School Strike for Climate Ashland

Confused about climate science? Meet Sweden’s Greta Thunberg.

This 16-year-old is responsible for starting a children’s climate movement that’s gone global. Since August, Thunberg has been skipping school every Friday to sit outside parliament with a sign that (translated) reads: “School strike for climate.”

Today, Friday, thousands of students from 105 countries and 100 US cities will join her school walkout to demand action on the emerging catastrophe. Thunberg just learned she has been nominated for a Nobel Prize.

Then there’s Trump. Last month, Trump created a sham panel to “reexamine” intelligence warnings that climate change is a significant threat to national security.

But 58 senior officials – admirals, generals and others – signed a letter warning: “It is dangerous to have national security analysis conform to politics.”

Also, momentum for addressing the climate crisis is building in Congress:

  • After years of ridiculing the science, more than 15 hearings on climate change have been held since January
  • Senators, including one from oil-dependent Alaska and another from coal country West Virginia, are publicly acknowledging the danger is real
  • Even ORD2’s Greg Walden is joining the gang of former deniers

Join Greta’s Friday protest today. Ask your MoCs to support the students and . . .

Demand Action!

Confront the Climate Calamity!

**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR SENATORS**

SAMPLE SCRIPT for Senators Wyden and Merkley:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling because . . .

. . . very shortly, climate change will become a global catastrophe. I urge the Senator to:

  • Join the children’s climate change school walk-out TODAY
  • Support the URGENCY behind the Green New Deal. We can’t afford to lose a year to inaction
  • Investigate why EPA enforcement actions have dramatically slowed as Trump seeks to cut the EPA’s budget by 31%
  • And finally, please investigate Trump appointees at the EPA who are shredding financial documents wanted by the Inspector General

Thank you.”

**ACTION TWO: CALL COMPLICIT GREG WALDEN**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR WALDEN:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling because . . .

. . . I want to thank Greg Walden for breaking with Trump to acknowledging that climate change is real and we must respond urgently. I disagree that technology will solve the problem. It has to be coupled with massive reductions in fossil fuel use.

Additionally:

  • Join the children’s climate change school walk-out TODAY
  • Support the URGENCY behind the Green New Deal. We can’t afford to lose a year to inaction
  • Investigate why EPA enforcement actions have dramatically slowed as Trump seeks to cut the EPA’s budget by 31%
