PROTECT US FROM TRUMP’S PROTECTIONISM

In the name of “America First,” Trump continues to alienate our allies and elevate our adversaries. He has reduced American engagement in the world by canceling or withdrawing from agreements and treaties.

His actions may lead to trade wars with our most important economic partners.  He has imposed mutually damaging tariffs and threatened to end all trade with our allies unless his demands are met.  He insulted our closest ally calling Canada a security risk, and Prime Minister Trudeau “dishonest and weak.” Trump’s bullying tactics know no bounds. And Greg Walden continues to support him.

In contrast, despite Putin’s continuous attacks on democratic institutions, Trump’s only contribution to the G7 meetings was a call for Russia’s reinstatement.  He then left early for a pressing photo op with the North Korean dictator.

Following a request from the Chinese government, with whom he has numerous business dealings, Trump lifted a ban placed on The Chinese telecom ZTE for violating U.S. sanctions on Iran. This despite the fact the Pentagon has urged U.S. retail stores not to sell ZTE phones because they pose an espionage risk.

By supporting autocrats and damaging our international alliances Trump—and Greg Walden—are putting our economic and national security at risk.

American Patriots in Congress must rein in Trump NOW!

**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR SENATORS**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR MERKLEY AND WYDEN:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent and voter  from [city], Oregon [zip code]. President Trump has called trade wars “good and easy to win.”  I am calling to express my concern that this attitude has led to actions and rhetoric that has alienated our allies and emboldened dictators.  Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution gives Congress power regarding tariffs.  I am asking the Senator to 1) push for bipartisan legislation like S. 2566 and S. 2538 which restore Congressional oversight on tariffs, and 2) to protect our security interests by passing legislation to keep the ban on ZTE in place. Thank you.”
