Today’s Call To Action

WE NEED A GOVERNMENT

#WHOCARESFORUS

NO MATTER WHO WE ARE

Trump is using the excuse of COVID-19 to further his racist and xenophobic agenda, blocking asylum seekers and virtually halting legal immigration to the U.S.  He doesn’t care about protecting our health.  He encourages the AstroTurf protests demanding an end to pandemic public health safety precautions.  He cares only for himself. He is unfit to lead.

The US already has the most confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the world, and the coronavirus did not enter the US from the southern border.  Scientists know that it arrived through airports, carried by travelers largely from Europe. Scientists assert opinions based on facts. Trump asserts wild theories based on wish-fulfilling fantasies. He is unfit to lead.

Trump doesn’t care about protecting our jobs.  He loves to stoke the popular racist myth that immigrants steal jobs, despite proof that immigrant workers not only don’t cost jobs, they improve the economy.  His total failure in this crisis both increased unemployment and damaged the economy. One in five Americans have lost jobs SO FAR during this pandemic due, in part, to Trump’s mishandling early on. He is unfit to lead.

Look at everything Trump says through the lens of his chances for re-election:

  • Diverting attention from his late response to the pandemic and his attempts to downplay it.
  • Blaming others for his failures.
  • Usurping more power from Congress.
  • Feeding the rage and racism of his base to keep them pumped up and engaged.

We believe that America is about inclusion and diversity. We want a government that cares about all people, including refugees who come here seeking asylum.

**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR U.S. SENATORS**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATORS MERKLEY and WYDEN:

“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [town/city], Oregon [zip code].

We need our government to find ways to help all of us through the physical and economic suffering caused by COVID-19. But Trump’s latest executive order is using the excuse of this pandemic to further his racist and xenophobic agenda.  The Senator must demand an end to the dangerous racist propaganda that uses immigrants as scapegoats.  And he must demand that his colleagues in Congress do their jobs.

This president cannot be allowed to unilaterally declare that our country will no longer abide by international asylum and refugee laws.

Thank you.”

TODAY: Friday, April 24, 12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Ongoing every Monday, Wednesday and Friday
#MyORHealth  Support is available for Oregon’s “helpers”

Lines for Life has created a Virtual Wellness Room to offer support to helpers, mental health professionals, first responders, social workers and anyone considered an essential worker during the COVID-19 pandemic in Oregon. Each check-in call will have a facilitator to guide the conversation.

“We at Lines for Life want to thank you for all the work you do to keep our communities safe,” the organization said. “We are offering a place for helpers to exchange stories of hope and areas of need. We especially want to hear what things are coming up for you personally and explore how we can cheer one another on to continue the good work you are already doing. We ultimately want to create space to breathe out stress and breathe in hope.”

The meetings are held using Zoom conference calls from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at this link: https://zoom.us/j/4848426773. Please share this invite with anyone in your network of Oregon helpers.
