Call to Action: November 3, 2017

CONGRESS MUST STOP THE SLIDE TOWARDS WAR

#NorthKorea

As Trump heads to Asia amid fears of a worsening Korea crisis, the dangers of war escalate:

• four American soldiers perished in Niger, focusing attention on the heretofore unnoticed deployment of 6000 U.S. troops in 8 African countries
https://www.vox.com/world/2017/10/26/16547528/us-soldiers-niger-johnson-widow-africa-trump

• GOP Senator Corker warned that Trump’s threats toward other countries could put the country “on the path to World War III”

Congress must step in to limit Trump’s ability to make war by:

• supporting the Preventing Preemptive War in North Korea Act, which withholds funding for preemptive war against North Korea, absent imminent threat or without express authorization from Congress
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/oct/26/democrats-push-bill-to-stop-a-trump-pre-emptive-strike-on-north-korea
• supporting the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act, which requires Congressional approval for a nuclear first strike https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/669/text
https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-bill/200/text
• updating the Authorization of Use of Military Force to limit the president’s ability to deploy troops without Congressional oversight https://www.congress.gov/bill/107th-congress/senate-joint-resolution/23/text/enr

“The President’s erratic, blustering approach to North Korea has created a huge risk of stumbling into a disastrous war,” said Senator Merkley. “…[W]e’re fools if we don’t start taking the president at his word,” added Senator Murphy. “He has shown an [extraordinary] enthusiasm for military force against North Korea ….”  https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2017/10/chris-murphy-north-korea-trump/544203/?utm_source=nl-atlantic-daily-102717&silverid=MzIzODQzNDI3Nzk0S0

Congress MUST check this increasingly beleaguered,

out-of-control and erratic president!

**ACTION 1: Call our Senators and Congressman Walden**
(if you can’t call during business hours, leave a voice mail! It all makes a difference!)**

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR SENATOR WYDEN:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. Congress must act now to check ability of the out-of-control Trump Administration to wage war. Will you join Senator Merkley in supporting the Preventing Preemptive War in North Korea Act of 2017? Please continue your support of the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2017 (S.200) and push for its enactment. We are also long past due for a re-evaluation of the outdated 2001 law that the president relies upon to authorize military actions worldwide. Please support a new Authorization of Use of Military Force, S.J. Res. 43, to limit the president’s war powers appropriately. Thank you.”
