Russia poses a clear and present danger to our national security. It interfered in the 2016 election to help elect Trump. It hacked the voting systems of several states in 2016. And it intends to disrupt our elections in 2018.
Trump has exacerbated the Russia threat by:
• Refusing to impose sanctions on Russia
• Failing to take any steps to protect our electoral system from hacking
Trump and the GOP are also undermining our national security by misusing intelligence in a partisan bid to derail the Mueller investigation. After Trump enthusiastically released the spurious Nunes memo, which smeared the FBI and DOJ, he applied a double-standard, refusing to release Democrats’ rebuttal memo, citing security concerns.
Trump’s attacks on our institutions are having an effect, increasing the fears that Mueller’s investigation is endangered. Rachel Brand, the third-ranking official at the DOJ, resigned amid speculation that she would be enmeshed in a constitutional crisis if Mueller were removed.
Congress must act to:
• Protect our elections: pass the Secure Elections Act moving to the most secure form of voting – paper ballots
• Protect Mueller: pass the Special Counsel Independence Protection Act
• Protect America: enforce Russian sanctions
