PROTECT PUBLIC LANDS FROM THE CHOPPING BLOCK

#ProtectMonuments
#AntiquitiesAct

Our public lands, loved and enjoyed by most Americans, are under attack. Trump wants to open them to energy and mineral exploitation by revoking federal monument designations—something no President has ever tried.

Instead, since 1906, 16 Presidents used the Antiquities Act to create over 170 monuments on 850,000,000 acres of federal land in 27 states—32 of which later converted by Congress into national parks.

H.R. 3990, sent to House floor without hearings 3 days after introduction, would gut the Antiquities Act, put national monuments at risk, make future designations almost impossible:
excludes lands, waters and wildlife habitats from definition of antiquities
prohibits monuments larger than 85,000 acres
requires county and state approval for any monument over 10,000 acres
authorizes sitting president to shrink or revoke monuments
opens protected public lands and waters to unfettered private development

Per Rep. Grijalva, the committee’s ranking Democrat, Republicans want to “reform” the Antiquities Act as they did the ACA, which is “Republican-speak for trying to destroy a popular and effective law . . .to serve the Koch brothers.”

We cannot allow this!

Fight to protect public lands and waters!

Preserve them for future generations!

**ACTION 1: Call Congressman Walden**
(Leave a message if you can’t get through.)

SAMPLE SCRIPT:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am outraged by the GOP’s attempts to gut the Antiquities Act. No President has ever tried to scale back or rescind national monuments, and we cannot permit Trump to open them up to unfettered commercial and mineral exploitation. I am asking Congressman Walden to oppose the National Monument Creation and Protection Act (H.R. 3990) when it comes to the House floor for a vote. This bill threatens America’s lands, waters, culturally and historically significant places, and wildlife habitats. We must protect our public lands and waters for future generations. Thank you.”

**ACTION 2 : Call Our Senators**

I am asking the Senator to oppose the National Monument Creation and Protection Act (H.R. 3990) when it, or S.33 or S.132 (equivalent Senate bills), comes to the Senate floor for a vote. These bills threaten America’s lands, waters, culturally and historically significant places, and wildlife habitats. We must protect our public lands and waters for future generations. Thank you.”
