FIGHT FOR A SPENDING BILL THAT BUILDS FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES

#Omnibus
#GovernmentShutDown

This week, Congress will debate a $1.3 trillion spending bill, which may be the last must-pass legislation before the midterms. The bill will need the votes of nine Democratic senators to avoid a government shutdown, which is set to happen at 12:01 am Saturday.  So compromise will be essential.

How are we to assess the bill’s diverse components, which range from extending a tax break for Starkist Tuna to defunding Planned Parenthood? About 100 “poison pills” have been attached as riders and Trump has his own. He’s threatened to veto the bill if it provides funding for a tunnel between NY and NJ.

Broadly, our Senators and Representatives should only support a measure if it:
strengthens families and communities
safeguards children and the environment they will inherit
offers economic opportunities so people can work their way to a brighter future
• allows broad access to affordable healthcare
protects immigration, which benefits and strengthens all Americans
• recognizes that sudden trauma and natural disasters mean that sometimes we all may need a hand to recover
builds democracy and a safer world

Votes from our Democratic MoCs will be critical.

We urge our Members of Congress to support the measures in the bill that strengthen communities, promote fairness, and protect democracy.

Where’s Greg Walden?

**ACTION 1: Call Complicit Greg Walden and our Senators**

SAMPLE SCRIPT:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent and voter from [city], Oregon [zip code]. Last week I called to ask [the Senator] [Greg Walden] to do all he could to keep dangerous riders out of the spending bill. This week I ask that he now make sure the spending bill is guided by principles that will strengthen families and communities, safeguard children and the environment they will inherit, and protect immigration that has benefitted us all and strengthens us as Americans. [Greg Walden must rise above the petty politics of protecting Trump, put people before party, and take care of his Oregon Constituents.] Thank you.”

**ACTION 2: Send to Family and Friends**

Share this post with friends and family, especially in red states. Urge them to contact their Member of Congress to voice their support for a spending bill that embodies those progressive values that strengthen families and communities, that safeguard children and the environment they will inherit, and that protects immigration that has benefitted us all and strengthens us as Americans.
