Every society is judged by how it treats the least powerful among them. By that measure, ICE shames us all.
Officers from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency have snatched mothers from families, fathers dropping their kids at school, and now we learn, hundreds of children from their parents. This week, NY Times reported that ICE has seized 700 children. Many of these children will languish in the system indefinitely.
The system is such a nightmare that it has drawn 33,000 complaints of abuse from adult prisoners, which is likely a massive undercount. One US District Court Judge said earlier this year that the treatment ICE victims suffer is something “…we associate with regimes we revile as unjust.”
Where’s Walden? Silence is Complicity!
Inspired by Trump’s anti-immigration rhetoric, ICE arrests are up 40%. That will grow. ICE is surging in sanctuary cities, issuing new guidelines to arrest pregnant women, and withholding humanitarian parole for asylum seekers.
“This is the bitter fruit of dehumanization – in a facility, in a system, in a country,” wrote conservative columnist Michael Gerson this week.

Hold hearings on ICE abuses!
Withhold funding until abuses are corrected!
**ACTION 1: Call Complicit Trump Enabler Greg Walden and our Senators**
SAMPLE SCRIPT:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent and voter from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling to express my distress at the actions of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. The massive roundups of immigrants and even those who appear to be immigrants is not normal. And the abuse they suffer in detention camps is outrageous. I ask that Congress hold hearings on ICE abuses and withhold funding until the abuse stops. Societies are judged by how they treat the least powerful of their members. We must do better. Thank you.”
**ACTION 2: It’s Time To Get Out The Vote**
It has become clear that we need a different Congress to stop ICE from abusing people’s civil rights. This includes replacing Greg Walden with someone who will represent We The People.
VOTE in the Primary for the progressive candidates of your choice. Ballots are in the mail! Be sure all of your progressive friends return their ballots by May 15—people who vote in the primary are EIGHT TIMES more likely to vote in the general election!
Don’t forget to VOTE the ENTIRE BALLOT! In Jackson County, we have two progressive women running for County Commissioner—Lanita Witt and Amy Thuren. Let’s get progressive voices into ALL LEVELS of Government!
