Authorities have stopped four more mass shootings since the El Paso and Dayton attacks. All were planned by solitary young white men, three with affiliations to white supremacist groups. A fifth mass shooting, in Gilroy CA, is being investigated by the FBI as a domestic terror incident.
Though pressure is mounting for Congress to #DoSomething , don’t assume success. Resistance in the Senate is strong and the NRA is working overtime to influence the outcome.
Even though Greg Walden, in an interview with OPB, expressed interest in tougher background checks on gun purchases, he voted NO on HR 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019.
We believe that now is the time to tell our MoCs what we really want, not to accept a few crumbs without a fight. What we want are laws that respect and protect life, that limit the flow of dangerous weapons through our communities, and that treat gun violence as a full-blown public health crisis:
- Ban assault rifles, military-style weapons, and high capacity magazines.
- Require background checks on all gun sales.
- Institute a strong Red Flag law to keep guns from anyone planning to harm themselves or others.
- Fund research and intervention projects.
- End gun trafficking across state lines.
- Modernize the ATF.
