STOP THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE FROM FLOUTING THE LAW
Jeff Sessions runs a Justice Department that flouts laws and due process. Under his watch, the DoJ supports Trump’s child-snatching policies in myriad ways:
- Asylum seekers crossing outside legal checkpoints are charged with a federal crime, separated from their children, and tried in groups — illegally — by DoJ prosecutors who pressure them to plead guilty. They return to ICE for asylum hearings with a criminal record.
- Asylum seekers appearing at legal checkpoints are sometimes prosecuted – illegally.
- Sessions now allows federal prisons to hold detainees, though they are not serving time for a federal crime.
Sessions has degraded the immigration courts:
- He has allowed judges to dismiss asylum pleas without full hearings.
- If he wins a fight to impose case quotas, judges – who are DoJ employees — could cut corners to keep their jobs.
- Immigrants are not guaranteed legal assistance. Under Session’s watch, young children – even infants– have appeared in immigration courts without representation.
- As a one-man supreme court, he overturned a court case for escapees of spousal abuse and gang violence.
Congress Must Make Sessions’ DoJ Accountable to the Rule of Law!
**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR SENATORS**
My name is [–] and I’m a constituent and voter from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling today because I want you to do everything in your power to stop Jeff Sessions from violating the rule of law and stop the federal courts from being his enablers. I ask the Senator to:
1) Make sure that any immigration reform bill removes the immigration courts from under the DoJ and funds representation for immigrants.
2) Investigate why the federal courts are holding group hearings for asylum seekers.
3) Investigate judges deciding cases without a hearing and the lack of representation for immigrants.
