PROTECT MUELLER AND RUSSIA INVESTIGATION

While the GOP led Congress failed to secure permanent CHIP funding and a clean DREAM act in 2017, another crisis is looming—Trump’s possible firing of Robert Mueller to shut down investigation of Russia’s 2016 electoral interference.

Increasing noise by Trump’s supporters inside/outside Congress is aimed at weakening/undermining Mueller to provide cover for later pardons.

Even if Mueller’s removal is not imminent, Congress must stop this constitutional crisis before it starts—Senator Mark Warner argues that removing Mueller or pardoning those charged would be a “gross abuse of power” that’s unacceptable and un-American.

In August, responding to anti-Mueller rumblings, the “Special Counsel Independence Protection Act” (S.1735/H.R.3654) was introduced in both chambers. https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-bill/1735/text  https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/3654/text  It would permit the special counsel’s removal only upon finding of good cause by 3-judge panel.

We cannot allow this legislation to languish!

We must also prepare to stand up for our country should Trump fire Mueller. Should that happen, ORD2 – Indivisible will stage a “Nobody is Above the Law” flash rally in solidarity with Indivisible and other groups nationwide. Our response to Trump’s power grab will then help determine whether Congress actually exercises its constitutional power/duty to rein Trump in.

**ACTION 1: Call Congressman Walden and our Senators**

SAMPLE SCRIPT for Congressman Walden:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am outraged by Trump’s attempts to undermine Mueller’s investigation.  He could very well create a constitutional crisis by firing Mueller during the holidays. I ask that Congressman Walden call for immediate passage of the Special Counsel Independence Protection Act (H.R.3654) https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/3654/text. It is his DUTY to ensure that we continue to be governed by the rule of law. I am extremely disappointed in the Congressman’s “yes” votes on the tax bill and continuing resolution. Time and time again he has chosen to back the interests of his party and corporate donors over those of his constituents. We will not forget come November 2018.”

SAMPLE SCRIPT for Senators Merkley and Wyden:
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am outraged by Trump’s attempts to undermine Mueller’s investigation.  He could very well create a constitutional crisis by firing Mueller during the holidays. I ask that the Senator call for immediate passage of the Special Counsel Independence Protection Act (S.1735) https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-bill/1735/text.  It is the Senate’s duty to ensure that we continue to be governed by the rule of law. I would also like to thank the Senator for voting “no” on the continuing resolution, and for supporting CHIP funding and the Dreamers. Thank you.”

**ACTION 2: SIGN UP TO ATTEND A “NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW” RALLY IF TRUMP FIRES MUELLER**

Sign up now so you are prepared to act, should Trump create a constitutional crisis by firing Robert Mueller to close down his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 national election.
