STOP THE TRADE WARS!
Trump: “Trade wars are good, and easy to win.” He thinks that being unpredictable is a terrific negotiating tactic. Trump is ignorant and wrong. Last week he put us at risk of economic disaster by imposing tariffs on aluminum and steel from our allies, the EU, Mexico, and Canada.
The EU, Mexico, and Canada are infuriated by the tariffs. They threaten retaliation, targeting Harley Davidson motorcycles, peanut butter, cheese, whiskey, Levi-Strauss, and dozens of more products. China also threatens tariffs on soybeans, whiskey and orange juice as Trump blew up negotiations with the Chinese on May 29.
“A tariff is a tax and … is paid by the American people.” Additionally, when other countries retaliate by imposing their own tariffs on US-made goods, they hurt US manufacturers. The Chamber of Commerce estimates that 2.6 million US jobs could be lost.
The tariffs have both political and economic consequences. Trump’s feckless actions have poisoned the upcoming G-7 meeting. Our allies are now less likely to cooperate when we need their help to resolve international crises.
Congress must pass bipartisan S. 2538, which rolls back these ruinous tariffs.
Both Republicans and Democrats oppose Trump’s trade policies.
Even Greg Walden says he’s “concerned.”
Talk is cheap. Demand ACTION!
**ACTION ONE: CALL OUR SENATORS**
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent and voter from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling because Trump threatens to ruin our economy by engaging in senseless trade wars. Trade wars are bad for our economy and make it less likely that we will enjoy our allies’ support when we need it. Please tell the Senator to support bipartisan S. 2538, which rolls back Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum. Please also ask the Senator to join Senator Merkley in supporting S. 2566, the Level the Playing Field in Global Trade Act of 2018. We need Congress to protect us from this feckless president. Thank you.”

Trade wars are bad for our economy and make it less likely that we will enjoy our allies’ support when we need it. We are grateful that Senator Merkley has taken the initiative of introducing S. 2566, the Level the Playing Field in Global Trade Act of 2018. Please tell him to push for its passage as well as support bipartisan S. 2538, which rolls back Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum. We need the Senate to protect us from this feckless president. Thank you.”
**ACTION TWO: CALL GREG WALDEN**
“My name is [–] and I’m a constituent and voter from [city], Oregon [zip code]. I am calling because Trump threatens to ruin our economy by engaging in senseless trade wars. Trade wars are bad for our economy and make it less likely that we will enjoy our allies’ support when we need it. Please tell Mr. Walden to introduce and seek passage for bills similar to bipartisan S. 2538, which rolls back Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum, and S. 2566, the Level the Playing Field in Global Trade Act of 2018. We need Greg Walden to put country before party and protect us from this feckless president. Thank you.”
