An informed citizenry is the lifeblood of democracy.
But how do we figure out what information is truthful and which news sources are reliable?
And why does a free press matter, anyway?
The second panel discussion and community dialogue event in Illinois Valley Indivisible’s series, “Democracy at Risk,” will take place on Sunday, April 8 from 3 – 5 PM at the RCC/Kerby Belt Building in Kerby, OR. The free event will focus on “Real News, Fake News, and Freedom of the Press.”

Geoffrey Riley
Jefferson Public Radio News Director and Host of The Jefferson Exchange
Geoffrey Riley is a veteran of the news business, having worked in broadcasting in Missouri, Alabama, Wisconsin, and Oregon. He moved to the Rogue Valley more than 30 years ago and joined Jefferson Public Radio full-time in 2009.
Julie Akins
Southern Oregon University Journalism Instructor, Freelance Journalist, Blogger
Julie Akins has twenty years as a network affiliated television news professional. She led newsrooms as a News Director, reported as an on-air investigative journalist in San Francisco and San Diego, and has written for numerous publications. She’s authored a book and taught journalism at Southern Oregon University and at Emerson College in Boston.
Mike Zacchino
Assignment Manager, KDRV TV
Mike Zacchino moved to Grants Pass in November after 18 years working for The Oregonian newspaper. He began there as Photo Lab Manager, eventually becoming the Director of Photography. Mike worked at The Los Angeles Times from 1989 – 1995, and was a photo lab technician with the San Diego Union Tribune from 1986 – 1989.
Dan Mancuso
Owner/Publisher, Illinois Valley News, Upper Rogue Independent
Dan Mancuso grew up reading newspapers and is a self-professed news junkie. His first job was as a paper boy for the Rochelle News Leader in Rochelle, Illinois in 1976. Dan was publisher of the Shelton-Mason County Journal, in Shelton, WA, and served as trustee of the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association.
Illinois Valley resident Kate Dwyer will serve as moderator for the panel discussion.
