SUMMARY:Non-ORD2 Indivisible Sponsored Event: Care Not Cuffs: Exploring Solutions to Addiction\, Mental Illness\, and Homelessness - Virtual
DESCRIPTION:Health care experts and activists will discuss how our county is dealing with the issues of addiction\, mental health and houselessness from a public health perspective. What programs are working and could be expanded? What programs are finding success in neighboring counties? With a bond measure for funding a larger jail on the ballot in May\, we felt it important for voters to increase their familiarity with programs that can help reduce incarceration and enhance treatment/assistance for vulnerable residents in our community. \nWe’ll explore these topics from 6:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday\, April 14. The forum will be presented live via Zoom and recorded for later viewing. \nEmail your questions: (in advance or during the presentation) to Sarah Spansail at vicechair@jcdemocrats.org. \nZoom link:\nhttps://zoom.us/j/436584529?pwd=MldUamkrMmQ4VnFhaGFQN2pOT3VjUT09\nPassword: 775432 \nOr Connect by Telephone:\n(669) 900 6833 or (253) 215 8782\nWebinar ID: 436 584 529\nPassword: 775432 \nFor more information:\nWebsite: https://www.jcdemocrats.org/calendar\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/JCDHealthCareCaucus/ \nPanelists: \nTim Black is the Operations Coordinator for CAHOOTS (Crisis Assistance Helping Out on the Streets)\, a nationally-recognized program operated by the White Bird Clinic in Eugene. CAHOOTS provides mobile crisis intervention 24/7 in the Eugene-Springfield Metro area and has been estimated to save the community $7 million annually by diverting patients from emergency rooms\, plus another $8.5 million by going on calls that would otherwise be handled by police. \nMeesha Blair is the Advocacy Chair for the Southern Oregon chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI SO) and has been active since her son’s mental illness presented five years ago\, leading to his arrest and incarceration. Meesha believes that community is strengthened through education\, collaboration and mutual respect. \nKerri Hecox is a family physician and co-founder/executive director of the Oasis Center of the Rogue Valley\, supporting parents in recovery from substance abuse and their dependent children. \nMatt Vorderstrasse is the Development Director for Rogue Retreat\, a non-profit helping people transition out of homelessness by providing housing and relationship-based case management. Rogue Retreat operates Hope Village\, the tiny-house transitional housing community in Medford\, and also operates\, in partnership with ACCESS and the Jackson County Continuum of Care\, the 54-bed Kelly Shelter in Medford\, which became a year-round shelter last November. \nLanita Witt is a retired physician with more than 45 years of experience in medicine and 30 years treating patients in Jackson County. Since retirement\, she has been a student of public health issues\, including attending the Local Alcohol and Drug Policy Committee of Jackson County as well as gaining an understanding of the Jefferson Regional Health Alliance work with the Community Health Assessment (CHA) and the ongoing Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). She has also participated in Oregon Recovers advocacy for drug and alcohol recovery programs in Oregon. \nLauri Hoagland (facilitator) is a family nurse practitioner at La Clinica’s Mobile Health Center and at the Phoenix Health Center.
